I have to say I really enjoyed this book. The story is about a futuristic Thailand where after certain biological diseases have destroyed the food sources, they are now biologically engineered by so-called calorie companies. Anderson Lake is the calorie-man undercover in Thailand, working to find seed sources the Thai government has been holding back.
Other characters include his expatriate chinese assistant trying to re-establish his former life, government agents that want to prove their agendas, and a bio-engineered secretary who has been abandoned to the sex trade and only wishes to be free.
Political intirgues and bad timing come together to throw everyone's plans off course.
I loved it that the ending was not what I expected, and the way no one quite won. I highly recommend

Nice to hear! I bought it on a whim and have been saving it for the right time.

I thought this was a tremendous book, especially for a debut novel. His short story collection Pump Six and Other Stories which uses a lot of the same concepts was nearly as good which is saying a lot.
