Jocelyn has a review of this which says, “I was trying to find something great to say about this book, because I did enjoy it, but nothing really stood out.”

And yeah, in a way I agree. I read this book last year working the night shift, and while I enjoyed reading it, now that I think about it, I can’t remember what made me like it.

The story jumps between the present, Jacob in a nursing home, and the past, Jacob running away from his life to join the circus. In the circus he falls in love with Marlena, a beautiful woman who is married to a complete asshole (as usual). Set this in the background of a traveling circus during the Great Depression and you have a pretty interesting story.

I do remember that I really liked the parts that were set in the present (nursing home), and the narrator’s struggles with memory.

Regardless, I recommend it.
