Somewhere in this 1000 page novel, there's a really awesome 350 page novel struggling to get out. I loved the setting, the aliens, and the revelations about both. And I liked a couple of the characters. But there were ... so ... many ... scenes devoted to ordinary human affairs and political negotiations and sex and violence and whatnot. Very few of those scenes seemed essential for character development, and they weren't especially well-written. I can't imagine what they were all doing there, but I'm willing to believe there's an ideal audience for them and that they just weren't my cup of tea. I won't be reading the continuation / sequel. A plot summary will have to do.
