The Kiss

I first came across this years ago while working in a bookstore. It had just come out and I was appalled at the subject and had no interest in reading it. At the time I was unaware of the perspective of the author, I had assumed that she had somehow broken a major taboo and was choosing to write about it in a great fit of horrifying exhibitionism. I had not realized how ruthlessly she had been dehumanized and then victimized by her estranged father. Later I came across some of her other writing and realized I liked her voice so I revisited the book. It's very well-written and disturbing, though not as explicit and titillating as others might have made it. It is much more an investigation of her own internal demons, how she saw herself and the world, and why she was in the position to be dominated in such a diabolical way. Interestingly, it was more of a discussion of her relationship to her mother and that element was far more intriguing. This is definitely not for the faint-of-heart and it is also not her best writing. Still, it is quite good, a brief little book that is thought-provoking and illuminating.
