I'm rather surprised at how good a writer Beagle is. I picked up this book because my sister gave me, for Christmas, a signed copy of (one of?) Beagle's collections of short stories, but I was ready to merely read the same story that I knew (by heart) from watching the movie since early childhood. Many of the lines and much of the plot was pretty spot on, but Beagle's narration and story-telling were beyond my expectations. I particularly enjoyed Beagle's use of parody, a mode that I normally dislike greatly. At times I felt that his approach to his descriptions and his scene-setting were a bit nebulous at times, but in the end this didn't take too much away from the book itself. A short, good, thought-provoking book and one that I'd suggest to any fantasy lover.

Volsung I'm glad to hear you think so well of it! It's been on my mental "wish-to-read" list for years now. I /really/ want to read it soon.

(By the way, Peter S. Beagle wrote the introduction to my old copy of "LotR"; I remember thinking it was pretty insightful.)
