** spoiler alert ** It took a few chapters for me to warm up to this one. I chose this book because I'm always looking for YA titles for when I restart teaching and need to update my classroom library. With that in mind, I thought some students would be very confused by the beginning of the book. I knew the grandfather was dead, but would they? I also was under the impression that he was a real ghost for several chapters, having not read the blurb on the back recently. The more I found out about the past, the clearer it became that the mother was crazy (manic depressive or schizophrenic would probably be more accurate). The second half was more engaging for me. I had anticipated the job working out for at least a few days, not being a disaster the first day. I thought that the scope of the present tense action would be weeks, not hours. So, when the mother went missing, it got more interesting, especailly with the search of the house. I expect that lots of my future students will really like this book, if they can get past the first couple chapters.
