Heaney, Seamus. (trans.). BEOWULF. (650-975; this ed. 2000). ****. Fifty years ago, during my college days, we would have killed to have a tranlation like this available to us. Learning enough Old English (Anglo-Saxon) to translate pieces of this epic poem was a job in itself; making it sound good was a whole different matter. Mr. Heaney was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995, and remains one of our greatest living poets. He currently lectures part-time at Harvard. A whole new translation of this poem was quite a chore, but Heaney worked on it for four years. The result is an eminantly readable version whi9ch I am sure will go unchallenged for a long time. Recommended.
