Let me start off by saying, is this cover pretty or what? I don't think I've seen a cover that I loved so much in a long time. It's sparkly, it's pink, and has super cute accessories. Love!
This is the first book in the Charley Davidson series/world and let me say that it's a really strong start! I'm impressed by the writing and the overall book, given that it's Darynda Jones' first book. I can certainly see why so many of my favorite authors (J.R. Ward, Kresley Cole) were raving about this book.
Charley sees ghosts. Well, it's a little more complicated than that. Charley is sort of a grim reaper...well, THE Grim Reaper. But the classic Grim Reaper has gotten a whole new look. Charley is a hot chick who is deliciously sarcastic and is not afraid to say it like it is. Oh, and did I mention she sparkles? Well, to ghosts at least. She's sort of a magnet of light for them. Anywho, in this debut novel we are basically learning about Charley and her world. We have a couple different stories going on. She's trying to solve the murder of three lawyer ghosts that have approached her. But, in the meantime, she's trying to discover the mystery of a man that has been coming to her in her dreams -- very sexy dreams -- as well as a being that seems to appear at moments where Charley is in a life or death situation. Although this being seems to have watched her and saved her on numerous occasions, she can't help but feel a certain fear towards him.
So Charley is probably one of, if not my top favorite heroine of all time. She has it all in my opinion. She's strong willed, but not a bitch. She's sarcastic and can make light of situations. She's funny and sexy, and all around I could totally see going out for drinks with this chick. She's awesome. Unlike some books where the male makes the story, SHE made the story. She is a truly solid heroine and that has created a very strong foundation for this series to work from.
The hero, when we get there -- ;) -- is also quite sexy and I like him so far. However, at this point he's still a big mystery. But, mysterious can be good. So, I'm looking forward to gettting to know him more throughout this series.
Overall, this is a really solid first book in a series. It does a lot of setting up though, and so the only down side was that the beginning was a bit slow. But it picks up! It's also one of the funniest books I've read in awhile. It's not funny as in making fun of paranormal books. It's more funny as in sarcastic funny and the heroine brings a lot of personality to the table. Not only that though, but the mysteries that were set up, and what the end reveals is QUITE a surprise. I thought I might have things figured out (view spoiler) but I was wrong. It was a huge surprise. So I'm VERY MUCH looking forward to the next book and I truly think this could be the next big series. It's a lot of fun and I recommend it to those people who love urban fantasy books with a sassy and fun heroine and lots of humor mixed in.

“I have three words for you," EMT Guy said. "Possible internal bleeding."
I turned back to him. "Don't you think if I was bleeding internally, I'd know somewhere deep inside? Like, internally?”

Thanks Greta! Yeah definitely don't be leery. It's great. Have you ever read the Night Huntress series? Although it's not the same, the humor is kind of like that series, but to a higher degree.
I've read the first Night Huntress book so squee!! I really liked that book. I'll have to give this one a shot
Great review Miss Sarah!! Glad you enjoyed this! And I must say that you are my book reading hero! You're a machine!! LOL!
