Eh. Don't bother.

'Memoirs' of a guy raised as an Orthodox Jew, multiple times lapsed and recovered, finally marries another lapsed Jew, they have a boy and he struggles with the circumcision decision. So I wanted to read this because I'm a big This American Life fan, and Shalom has had a few stories on there recently that I enjoyed. I knew that one or two of them actually came from this book, so thought it might have other goodies inside as well. Well, the best chapters were the body-watching episode and the walking to the Rangers game on Shabbos episodes that were a part of recent This American Lifes (I remember running along the ocean in San Diego listening to the body-watching one, making strange faces as I reacted to what I was hearing--I'm sure people thought I was a nut). In my opinion, most of the rest are just opportunities for him to swear at God in front of an audience, trying to be provocative and stir up press of any sort. I hadn't really heard anything about his book apart from This American Life, so even dropping f-bombs directed right at Him wasn't enough to get people talking about it. I guess that should tell you something. Also didn't enjoy how often he referred to deleting everything he had written from his computer--multiple times--and the warning message that it gave about being sure he wanted to delete everything. One tidbit: his title is metaphoric: he thinks he's been treated like a foreskin himself, separated from his family and tossed aside because he's turned his back on what he sees as Orthodox Insanity.
