Occasionally too nebulous and freewheeling in the articulating of its ideas, but otherwise an enormously cogent and thoughtful lightning-rod of a book that has much in common with Brian McLaren's likewise striking (although, for its framework as a fable, less successful) The Last Word and the Word after That. Bell is better here on the Prodigal Son narrative than I've ever heard or read elsewhere, in large part because of the context (i.e. the book's central, controversial conceit) in which he positions his interpretation of it -- one reads his reading of the parable and cannot but believe he has struck on its most elemental, most (as it turns out, inexplicably) elusive, most ardent truth.
