This author is wonderful. A tale set long before the events of her Alanna series. She doesn't shy from some unlovely aspects of life but since this is for teens, her heroes are quite noble and her villains are quite despicable.

623773 Heh, that's funny. You know as a teenager I never liked the unhero type books like The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. He's a rapist and a leper. But maybe as an adult I'd appreciate it? Hmm, I dunno. I still kind of want my heroes to be noble.

137273 The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant were a bit too much for me. I think I stumbled onto and over them in middle school. Maybe we'd both like those books better now. I have noticed that I used to like perfectly noble heroes but now I appreciate a bit more realism, a little more than this book had. Not too much though; after all, how can escapism help you escape if what you read resembles the news too closely? TCTC might still be too much. I'm like the baby bear and Goldilocks, not too hot/hard and not too cold/soft but juuuuuust right.
