The story of how a Chinese woman tries to live her life druing World War 2. It's a novel about friendship, hardship, love for family and tradition and how all those infuence our choices in life. Even though the themes are heavy, the novel has a humorous tone and is written so beautifully, you just cannot put it down until you know how Winnie's story will end.
I adored reading this book. It was one of those books you kept in the back of your mind while you weren't reading it and it was constantly nudging me to go read some more. The story was interesting to say the least. I didn't know anything about China during WW2 (or even in general, really) so it was very interesting to read about the perspective of a young woman, trapped in her country and marriage. I also liked reading about the various traditions and about how the woman's daughter, during modern times, views her and their relationship.
I highly recommend this novel because I think everyone can learn something from it.
