Savage, compelling, manipulative, simple, poetic...These adjectives all apply, but they do not save the book from its negative traits. Jack London was a natural storyteller, but he was also a racist and a sexist. I thought it was my imagination at first, but after some research I realize that those accusations are common. I mention this fact because it distracted me from the story.

The imagery is rich, the spirituality moving, and by the end, I was completely enthralled by Buck's adventures. It's just a bumpy ride along the way.

Daniel Jon Kershaw I don't feel it's fair to judge a work based on the writer's lifestyle and mindset. Racism and sexism was rife in his time.

Ulla I agree with Daniel. Also if you are judging individuals from 1903 99% of people alive were racist and sexist, women included.

Somerandom I agree with the other posters. Racism and sexism was common back then. He was an author from the 1900s. What the hell do you expect? A modern man, with PC sensibilities!?
