The Confectionary Association’s annual contest is approaching, and four kid contestants are preparing their new candy at Life is Sweet candy factory. Each of the four has his or her own reason for entering the contest, but they may not be what you expect. The author uses sections to tell the events leading up to the contest from four people’s point of view: Logan, the sweet, honest son of the Candymaker; shy and quirky Miles; friendly but inexplicably strong Daisy; and aloof, snooty Philip. Just when you think you have the characters mostly figured out, another secret unfolds that causes you to want to read just a little bit more. In fact, reading the book is a lot like eating your favorite candy – once you start, it’s hard to stop!

One thing I appreciated about this book was that it reminded me not to make up my mind about people before getting to know them.

Keep an eye out for the butterfly that appears throughout the story – what do you think it means to each character and to the larger story?

The Candymakers will appeal to readers who like to be surprised with completely new twists and who enjoy reading mystery mixed with humor.
