What a fantastic novel! I picked this up as an ebook not knowing it was 'for children' - Gaiman's notes at the back of the book summarise perfectly that this is indeed a fairy-tale (of the Grimm variety) for all ages.
My favourite quote of his is that "[Coraline] was a story, I learned when people began to read it, that children experienced as an adventure, but which gave adults nightmares." I love that! I was shocked at the gross descriptions of some scenes in the book, but it all fits so perfectly and is (at worst) unsettling and not terrifying at all.
Brilliant - I can't wait for my kids to be old enough for me to read it to them!
