okay, i should have done this review before i finished the third book, but here goes...

libba bray has developed characters that i think all of us can relate to, in some way. as felicity says in A Great and Terrible Beauty, 'Once upon a time there were four girls. One was pretty. One was clever. One charming, and was mysterious.' but these are just the things other people see, not what's inside the girls...their desires, their struggles, their fears. those things are, what i think, make the characters so relatable, honest, and likeable. as i was reading the story, i longed to be a part of their circle. i think that's what sets great writers apart from the rest, that ability to pull the reader in and make them feel as though they are a part of the story, not just reading from the sidelines with no real connection to the characters.

and the author doesn't stop with great characters. the world (or should i say worlds) she created in the gemma doyle trilogy are beautiful, fantastical, and altogether real. it really feels as if the author could have written this novel in the late 1800's...the book does not *try* for historical fiction, it just is. it was like reading jane austen, but better. i'm sure ms. bray did her research when writing these novels, and it shows.

i enjoyed 'rebel angels' even more than 'a great and terrible beauty' because of the revelations in and by the characters; i felt i knew them much better after this second novel. and the storyline seems to have taken on a life of it's own. discovering the secrets of the realms and who to's captivating being along for the ride with gemma, felicity, ann, and pippa.
