The Hidden Staircase (Nancy Drew, #2)
by Carolyn Keene, Mildred Benson

Nice fluffy haunted house story, that serves as a bit of a time capsule for its times. Not a terribly historically accurate picture of the time period, it's probably as accurate as Ian Fleming or Agatha Christie were about England, but a taste of the past.
anyone that's ever seen a Scooby-doo episode will be able to solve the mystery pretty quick.
Due to the time it was written, Nancy Drew, even though considered an independent woman, is still pretty girly. We get lots of descriptions of her clothes, she does lots of household chores and the author never puts her in much danger.
At the same time, she is a likable girl, who isn't shaken or scared by the mysteries/threats she encounters and is portrayed as being very smart. Rarely does she discover a clue by dumb luck. She thinks her way through.
A light weight story, with a good lead character. So, a fun read.
