Though this was not the book I thought it was when I picked it up, I enjoyed it a great deal. It was much headier than I anticipated, but it was quite thought provoking. Much of it I had heard before from other sources, particularly the works of Robert Anton Wilson, though this book gave a much more base-line and understanding of common themes that run throughout all religion and myth. I didn’t quite buy all of it, but there is definitely truth to be found.

One particular passage stands out for me:
Moyers: Do you think Jesus today would be a Christian?
Campbell: Not the kind of Christian we know. Perhaps some of the monks and nuns who are really in touch with high spiritual mysteries would be of the sort that Jesus was.
Moyers: So Jesus might not have belonged to the Church militant?
Campbell: There’s nothing militant about Jesus. I don’t read anything like that in any of the gospels. Peter drew his sword and cut off the servant’s ear, and Jesus said, “Put back thy sword, Peter.” But Peter has had his sword out and at work ever since.

I would recommend this book to any seekers, those trying to find deeper meaning behind the facade of life, or anybody interested in comparative religion. This is not a book for though not those wedded to religious doctrine. They would just think it blasphemy.
