Another example of why I should try and overcome my prejudices when it comes to writing styles. I've never been a big fan of books that tell the stories through journal entries. It's often broken the illusion for me, because it is a very difficult style for an author to master, otherwise it reads as unbelievable or too dull and wordy. I was first introduced to a well written book in this style with the classic tale Dracula.

Dracula took me a while to get into before I fell in love.

The Lost World captivated me in the first chapter.

I had seen the t.v. show (1999-2002 version) before reading this and it was fascinating to see which characters have been completely made up for the show and which ones had completely different personalities from what I expected. There were only a few characters in the book who were exactly as I expected.

The dynamics between characters kept me on the edge of my seat with alternating tension and warmth at their rivalries and brotherhood through their trials. I only wish that it was part of a series so that I could continue along with these characters! I keep a book on my ipod at all times to read in the five or ten minutes I have here and there when I'm out and about, but I ended up unable to restrain myself with this one, sometimes even sneaking off for a few minutes during social events for a "bathroom break". I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves a good adventure series with substance.
