The beauty of this book is that it's written for older children/teens, yet is engaging and instructive for adults as well. That's not easy to do.
To be brief, here's a list of what I loved about this book:
1. The whole concept. It's fascinating to think about living in a world like the one Jonas lives in, and the pros and cons are so skillfully weighed in the story.
2. The well-written pre-teens. When I read this book for the first time in 6th grade, I totally related to Jonas and his friends. Reading it as an adult, I again felt how accurately the thoughts and concerns of that age group were rendered.
3. The tightly-woven hypothetical. One of my biggest pet peeves about fantasy or other novels that hinge on a big "If" is the plot holes they so often bring up without resolving. I thought Lowry did an excellent job of making her alternate world believable, without really bringing up and making us wonder about the things that didn't so much make sense.
