Ben When I first read The Golden Compass (or The Northern Lights), I must admit it was quite difficult for me to grasp the general storyline – but then again I was only 12 at the time; I don’t think my brain had fully formed yet. :-) As a young adult I re-read the book again; I found that the book was immensely enjoyable, with the different characters, and the vivid description of Oxford in Lyra’s world. With each chapter, I found myself immersed into the world of The Northern Lights, with fantastic polar bears in armour or the different characters with their own stories and backgrounds or even the brilliant idea of people’s personalities as daemons. After starting to read it – I found that the book was impossible to put down; I had to know what happened next! So overall, I’d say that the book is a brilliant work of fiction, with many themes and ideas surrounding it.
