The homemaking bible. I think it is "The Joy of Cooking" for households. I really like the beginning of the book because it goes into the reasons about why all this stuff matters (she did get an undergraduate degree in philosophy, after all). It's very thorough, not dependent on trends or on specific brands, and open to more than one way of doing things. I think her only weakness is that she only has one child, so may not be aware of some of the challenges (laundry only once a week?) involved in a house full of people, her grandmothers notwithstanding.
