The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2)
by Rick Riordan
by Rick Riordan
I wasn't all that impressed with book (apologies to Karin who loves it). I liked the concept: young demi-god (hero) living in normal USA must venture into classical mythology (gateway fantasy) to get Golden Fleece (quest) and defeat the powers of evil (villain). So it's another herioc quest story (aren't all fantasy novels?). Despite its popularity with kids and the way it's revitalizing children's interest in Greek/Roman mythology, I found the characters inaccessible and the whole thing just too contrived for my tastes. Still, it has real value for children (and they're lapping it up), so, "Go Rick Riordan."

I could not agree more. You and I are most definitely in the minority, but I felt exactly the same way.
Considering these are childrens books, I think people shouldn't be reviewing them as harshly, considering we're not the intended market. have to remember that most are nearly identical anyway.
I found the entire series enjoyable. Unlike Brian did, based upon his review. I'm looking forward to the books he writes.I'm a grandmother who enjoys reading children's books. I have hopes that my grandchildren will enjoy reading as I do.
I loved all the books!!Except my least favorite was Sea of Monsters. :(
When I was reading it every time I put it down I wasn't just dieing to pick it back up. But when I finished I thought it was well a good book.
Throughout the book, I was secretly hoping that Grover would be torn to pieces by polyphemus and Percy would be eaten by scylla. That would have made my day. XD
