This was great for me because it was a Pulitzer prize winner, dealt with the Dominican experience both in the DR and the US and had lots of sci fi, gaming, comic references. Crossed a bunch of interest areas for me. Plus it provides the opportunity to learn a lot of obscenities in Spanish. It is the story of an ostrosized youth of Dominican heritage living in NY. He is trying desparately to fit into the normal social scene but his physique and his interests make it nearly impossible. He takes refuge in his writing---hoping to be the next big sci fi author. It also tells the story of his mother and sister which brings in the DR experience under Trujillo. Although not a very happy story I found it engrossing.
