In general I'm a fan of Walter Jon Williams, but This is Not a Game left me feeling disappointed. The story is strongest at the beginning, as the main character, Dagmar, attempts to escape her hotel room in Jakarta after the civilian government has collapsed. Her alternating fear and boredom feel very real, and the trickle of information available from brief phone calls and limited internet access adds to the tension.

After escaping Jakarta, the story never regains the tension and excitement of the opening act. The rest of the cast prove less interesting than their initial introduction. It's relatively fun to follow Dagmar through the twisting plot, but I became steadily less engaged all the way to the end. A sequel was recently published, but I find myself uninterested. That's a shame with a new book from an author I've usually enjoyed very much.

I think Implied Spaces is much the better place to start reading Walter Jon Williams.
