Someone said this book was essentially a love story so I spent the first 3/4 of the book wondering who Miss Mary Sutter was going to "love". (There are several potential suiters.) I suppose that left me more curious than anything, but I wouldn't classify this as a love story at all. I would classify this as Rosie the Riveter meets "Little Women", all set during the Civil War.
I like most things that have to do with Lincoln and the author incorporates his presidency into the book. I did learn a few things about various people whom I had forgotten since my American History class in college; John Hay, Dorothea Dix, George McClellan, etc.
There were many dramatic pauses in the storyline. Maybe too many. I was sad to learn Mary Sutter was a fictional character. She was almost so believable I felt like Wikipedia-ing her afterwards.
