Some excellent writing and set pieces here (the basement sequence is brilliant), and Mathilda's voice is skillfully executed, convincing and engaging. Alas, the novel is structured as a series of secrets revealed, and the final revelations are both somehow uncharacteristically implausible and yet wholly expected. Not only do the surprises start to fizzle in the book's final third, the character of Mathilda finally crosses into the realm of the unsympathetic. And for all its well-crafted depiction of her family's emotional nexus, the book ends without a satisfying resolution of those tensions. Such a fine beginning and such a disappointing conclusion.
