This is the second Alice Hoffman book I have read and I liked "The Third Angel". It started off with a myopic bratty young woman (Maddy) who falls in love (lust?) with her sister's fiance, Paul but her sister Allie does not love Paul (or does she?). I found this part of the book tedious and soul sucking...

However in the hotel that Maddy stays in for her sister's wedding in England appears to be haunted!!! This immediately caught my attention. The story weaves around Maddy, Allie, their mother and Paul's mother and how the two women of the older generation connected (unknown at present time) to a tragic murder. Was this really a murder? Was this MORE? Is this the ghost?

I felt like I needed to keep notes on who was who and what they did but finally by the end things become more clear as there is a fascinating ending that did not leave me sad at all (as compared to other reviewers).

Now I will argue that this book is not nearly as brillant and well written as Hoffman's "The Red Garden" but this book was entertaining and thought provoking.

It was fun to escape to see what London was like in the sixties and how paths cross innocently enough to recross again in the future. This book also showed me that things are NEVER what they seem to be--from Paul to the local drunk.
