This is the first book I've read by Nalo Hopkinson, so I didn't know what to expect. The characters are fresh and the viewpoint character, Calamity, has a great voice. The character development is well done, but it overshadows the speculative concepts in the book (there are two big ones). I know there is always a call to develop characters through the external plot, but in this case the speculative plot seemed a distant second. Still a pleasant and engaging read, though.
