I was really let down by Bonnie Jo Campbell's American Salvage, because I was hoping to love this collection of short stories. Out of all the stories, there was only a few that I could say I somewhat enjoyed. I love raw, gritty stories and characters which American Salvage is full of. What I felt was missing though was an interesting plot in most of these shorts. I felt that Campbell most of the time created these really interesting characters, but instead of going on a journey with them, we just got a sliver of their somewhat mundane lives. Even if a huge event happened in a story, all excitement just seemed to start and end right there. This is obviously a great book that it was a National Book Award finalist...it was just not for me.
