This book is incredible for many reasons, but I just had to re-read the first chapter for my fiction writing class and now I'm even more impressed. Her POV is pretty amazing - she's like a telepathic fly on the wall and she's equally masterful at the intimate details as she is at hovering at a distance when necessary. This book centers around an opera singer and a hostage situation and it is itself an opera in style and scope, with her words as her notes. Ann Patchett really digs into the humanity of each character and showcases how important beauty is in the world.
