This is the second time I have read this series and I found myself laughing out loud as I read about James Herriot's adventures with every kind of sick animal and its owner. Herriot's story telling is stellar! He describes the country and the people with unerring canniness and charm. The ending becomes a little disconsolent as he is called up to serve in the second World War. But it is still an uplifting work.
