There's not so much exposition in this book as in the last one. By now we know all the players and we have the basic jist of the overall plot.
The reader is anxious just as anxious as the Baudelaire children as they head off to their new guardian. After the last one they have no idea what to expect, and cannot help being nervous that this one could be worse. After all, we're all getting the idea that Mr. Poe is not the best judge of character. But the moment everyone meets Dr. Montgomery, we are all reassured. Dr. Montgomery is calm, sweet, generous, everything you could want in a proper guardian. The Baudelaire children feel that this could be a very nice home for them.
But, because this is called A Series of Unfortunate Events things don't stay nice for long. I won't spoil anything for you, but I'm sure you can guess that the orphans don't stay with Uncle Monty for long.
Lemony Snicket writes with his usual pompous, yet caring manner, throwing in large vocabulary word...more
