This was my first Emily Giffin novel, and I couldn't put it down. I actually went out yesterday and bought the sequel, Something Blue, which I just started. In Something Borrowed, Rachel and Darcy have been best friends since elementary school. They have a good relationship yet throughout the years, Darcy has always "one-upped" Rachel, and Rachel has allowed this, sometimes unknowingly and sometimes knowingly but passing it off as "that's just Darcy". It isn't until Darcy is engaged to a good friend of Rachel's, a guy whom Rachel introduced to Darcy, that things get a little dicey. On the evening of Rachel's 30th birthday party, Darcy gets so wasted that Dex, her fiance, takes her home, but then he goes back out to hang out with Rachel and her friends, including his best friend Marcus. That night Dex and Rachel hook up, and they chalk it up to a mistake at first, but then both of them cannot help their feelings and they actually begin a secret relationship. This is where the author almost lost me since I thought what they were doing was so wrong, but you find yourself siding with Rachel and Dex because of Darcy's arrogance and selfishness that comes through in many of her interactions with her friends, co-workers, and her fiance. A fast, enjoyable read that comes to an unexpected conclusion. I heard they just made a movie of this book so it will be interesting to see the movie and compare the two.
