One Day
by David Nicholls
by David Nicholls
Finally finished reading this book yesterday, it only took a whole month. I love the occasional chick lit, the kind of book that I would pretend I haven’t read if I were that kind of person who cares that people judge me by the books I read. Having said that, I will secretly judge you if you tell me that you love the Shopaholic and Twilight series, not that I haven’t read them, I have, I just don’t love them. I’ve read more books by Nicholas Sparks than I care to admit, I just keep hoping that they get better, they never do. I’m always in search of a book that’ll put butterflies in my stomach and a smile on my face, so if you have any recommendations, please send them my way. But if you recommend the Time Traveler’s Wife, I will punch you in the face. That book was torture. My two favorites would Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist and Brand New Friend by Mike Gayle (I have no idea why this hasn’t been turned into a movie yet!)
Back to One Day, a book following two people one day a year for twenty years. Sounds promising enough, it was kinda sweet but it wasn’t enough. It was bitter, everyone was bitter, the characters were unlikable and very whiny. There were a lot pages where I just wanted to shout “Get over yourself”, most of my friends’ lives are more entertaining than this book. Especially my guy friends’, you can’t help but tell them “I told you so” but at the same time you’ll want to buy them a shot or three to make them feel better. And they’re much more likable than Dexter. Dexter reminds me of our friend (if you can call him that) that we secretly refer to as Spencer Pratt.
So no, this book didn’t give me butterflies in my stomach or a smile on my face, I was just annoyed. I’ll probably still watch the movie though, but only for Anne Hathaway.
So that was my lame attempt of a book review.
Please ignore me.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will definetely check out Isabel Allende, and Memoirs of a Geisha is on my to read list.
Love is a mixed tape by Rob Sheffield. Don't know if it will give you butterflies but it's a good read.
That's actually been in my to read list for a while now. Maybe when after I finish reading a Song of Ice and Fire. Thanks for the recommendation.Melissa wrote: "Love is a mixed tape by Rob Sheffield. Don't know if it will give you butterflies but it's a good read."
You are better than I am. I read Message in a Bottle, threw it across the room and never gave Sparks another chance.
if you want a heroic love story i would recommend you check out the bronze horseman by Paullina Simons.the love story will definitely give you chills. however, if you liked nick & nora's you should also check out Anna and the French kiss by Stephanie Perkins. hope it helps. : )
Anything by Nick Hornby, The English Patient, Loving Frank, Alice I Have Been, anything by John Green...
I read your review after I finished. I appreciate your insight; it's exactly how I feel about this book. Love Anne Hathaway, so I'm naively thinking they'll somehow "fix" the story line and the characters, but I have my doubts.
I know exactly what you mean with your chicklitthing. You should try 'come together' from Josie Lloyd and Emlyn Rees. It's the only chicklit I ever really liked. Only the first book though, the sequels are very bad. I read it in Dutch too as I am Belgian, but I guess the original - English- one should be good too.

You have probably read the Bridget Jones books. That is what I had hoped One Day would be more like. If you have not, I recommend giving them a try.
