This is very enjoyable as a single reading (especially since it's short and I'm a slow reader). It's a lot like looking at a painting - there are beautiful sweeps and caverns that occur, that drew me into this half-conceived world of an island, snow, a dictatorship, a woman whose face we never see.... At the end of the day, Kavan was a heroin addict and I think this late book of hers reflects that in its attention to the phenomenal, though sometimes aimless, descriptions of place and people.

I found it randomly and was hungry for something different. I had never heard of her, so it was a nice book to happen upon.
