This is the third book I've read in which the mother is horribly unfit, irresponsible, and downright negligent. I think it's starting to drive home to me that there are actually people like this in the world, which I guess I knew but never really KNEW.

Waiting for Normal stands with Sorta Like a Rock Star and Looking for JJ to me, but it is the light, sweet, younger version of the story. It lacks the emotional punch and redemption of SLARS and is a bit too happy-ending, unlike Looking for JJ, which really tackles the emotional damage this kind of life causes. But it was sweet, and it made me cry. I'd give it 2.5 stars if I could, because it really isn't as good as either of the other two, but for a younger audience, it was nicely written.
