So we left the 1970s for the 1850s and read about Kirsten's journey from Sweden to Minnesota. Poor Kirsten gets lost and then her best friend Marta dies of cholera on the riverboat. And then Kirsten has to leave her doll behind in the family trunks that have to be stored because her family can't afford a wagon to carry their belongings from the riverfront to their uncle's farm. And to top it off, she doesn't even speak English. These are the things that troubled Abby. When playing with our Kirsten doll, she often sighs and says, "Poor Marta." Abby also noted that Kirsten isn't as brave as Julie. We'll see if the rest of the stories change her mind. Poor Kirsten!
