I am not a long time reader of Preston and Child novels. So I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought there was lots of action and it held my attention for wanting to know how it was going to end.

The first part of the book gives the background of Gideon Crew. His childhood was a mess because his father was killed by government snipers when he took a fellow government employee hostage. Gideon watched that happen and it totally affected him. His mother became an alcoholic and their lives spin out of control. Now jump ahead a decade and Gideon is a small time art thief, but really very good at what he does. He is called to the hospital because his mother is dying. Her death bed confession is to tell Gideon that the U.S. government murdered his father to bury a secret. Mom wants revenge and makes Gideon promise to get that.

She dies and we flash forward another ten years and Gideon gets his revenge. End of story, right? Nope, we are only 50 some pages into the story, so what is the real story?

The real story is that the U.S. Government needs Gideon to do a job for them that in essence will save the world. Yeah, ok, right. Well the story has some very plausible issues and the action is non-stop. There are thrills, espionage, detective work and a bit of romance thrown in as well.

But my problem is that the authors don't leave me really liking Gideon Crew. Maybe it's me, but Gideon is not the type of hero that I grow to admire or cheer for.

But, they did keep my interest throughout the whole book. I also started to read others reviews of their earlier works. I want to go back now and read their earlier stuff, because if they are better than this then they must be really really good.

Will I read the next story about Gideon Crew? Yeah, I must admit that I will. So that tells you that I did enjoy their writing. I hope you will enjoy it.

Oh, and the publisher does include a bonus book from Brad Meltzer so that is nice, getting two books.

Enjoy!
