After the last installment, this volume took me a little by surprise. I was expecting the whole Dodge vs. Locke Family thing to come to a head, which it does in a very satisfying way, but I wasn't expecting the "episodic" format. Whereas the previous volumes each had one overarching story, this reads as a set of self-contained issues of a comic book series, most of which a newcomer could pick up off the rack and follow without knowing the whole background. That's a good thing for a comic to do at this point in the series - bring in new readers. It also gives us a feel for what the (now not-to-be-made) Locke & Key TV series would have been like.

My understanding is that the pilot was fantastic, but network execs were worried that it would be "too smart" for TV audiences. Bastards.
