If I could give it 3 1/2 that is what I'd rate this debut novel about immigrant Kimberly Chang and her mother and their early years in a squalid Brookyn apartmen described by Kimberly as "That ws Ma and me: two squeamish Buddhists in the apratment from hell". They are forced, due to debts owed to Aunt Paula, to do illegal piece work in a Chinatown sweatshop. The author did a great job of channelling a young girl and her description of cooties and the craze of autograph books had me me laughing outloud.
