Mercer Mayer's picture book describes a child's fear of a nightmare in his closet. When he decides to face his fear he ends up comforting his nightmare and inviting him back to bed, only for the reader to find out there is another nightmare waiting there still. Crosshatching is a prominent feature of each illustration and the colors of the book stay in the red and blue hues. Mayer uses a combination of framed, cut-out and full-bleed images. The nightmare is a large, monster-like creature with polka-dotted skin and silly teeth, seemingly not scary for younger children. This is a wonderful read for any children with fears about their closet, showing that in order to get past a fear, you must face your fears.
