I've never read any Jodi Picoult before, but I had to read this one when I saw the subject matter. I thought it was great. Real, honest, open. Her writing is fairly strong, but it's the characters that make it truly spectacular work. I felt like I knew these people, their joys, and their sorrows. Zoe's ex-husband took quite an abrupt turn in the personality department that I didn't understand for his character, but then again I don't understand church-sanctioned hate in the real world either. My biggest complaint was with the ending, which I thought was a bit weak. On the other hand, I don't know how a better way to end it would have been. Still, the journey was much more important than the destination in this one.

And with regard to the accompanying CD - just say no. It didn't add anything. In fact, I thought it took a lot away, so I stopped listening to it after about the fourth track. Books are books - no musical accompaniment necessary when you bring your own imagination.
