Don't be fooled by the title; this book is about much more than elephants in Africa. I learned about all the animals on a conservation park, the dangers of poachers, and the inner workings of Zulu tribes. The book's writing style isn't much to comment on, but I enjoyed learning about the author's life and struggles. Anyone who read Modoc and Water for Elephants and likes the lure of elephants should read this. I've always wanted to go to Africa to tour a game preserve, but after reading this, I know that I when I finally do make it to Africa, I will only stay at a small privately owned conservation preserve.

the private reserves - not "preserves" - are good but you will get a lot of "African bush" from the Hluhluwe, Umfolozi, Kruger, Pilansberg etc - I could keep naming for ages. Cheaper and you get to walk and sit in the hides from about 4am watching all those wondrous animals coming down to drink - nothing like this you get from a private game park
