Absolutely amazing book! I could not put it down. Conroy has such a gift with words. His characters are real. With the way he writes and the order in which he tells the flashbacks, he doesn't allow you to hate any of the characters for too long. Mainly, because the central figure has forgiven all. They all have redeeming qualities. Barbara Streisand absolutely murdered this book with her film adaptation. She made the movie all about Lowenstein's relationship with Tom and left out so many of the important family stories. But the worst injustice, was omitting Luke's saga. Definitely on of my all time favorite books.
