This book was stunning. In writing, in style, in plot, in character! It truly is one of those books that you really can't stop reading. Especially for me, because in a way it took me back to my Lurlene McDaniel days. Did anyone ever read her? She was always writing books about different teenagers and young children with terminal illnesses. I was addicted to those books. So it was no surprise when the young reader in me sort of jumped up when I saw a friend of mine reading this book and she described it to me.
Boy was it a book well chosen. Picoult writes from the views of a few different key characters, allowing the reader to get an extremely well-rounded look at the story. At first the jumping from character to character is a little jarring and you have to keep reminding yourself that it's a new character, but eventually you get into the vibe of the book and wouldn't have it written any other way. The one thing Picoult does perfectly is make you torn. You really don't know who to support in a case like this. At times you find yourself leaning towards Anna, and other times wanting desperately to shout your support for Sara, the poor mother in this situation.
With the readers information of other characters points of views and knowledge, the whole case is a lot more difficult to have a desired verdict towards. In the end a decision is made, a decision that, while reading the book, I was constantly wondering what Picoult was going to do, because either way one fully supported side was going to lose. But the way she really ends the book puts results to rest in a solid, yet emotionally unsatisfying ending. The ending it by no means bad, quite the contrary it was beautiful and settling, but at the same time you don't know whether to be relieved that there was an extremely closed ending without debate, or to cry. I won't tell you why, and I may have said too much already. But this book is just incredible and I highly advise you try to read it as soon as possible.

I haven't thought of Lurlene McDaniel in years! What a throwback! I loved her books when I was young. I must have had some kind of sick obsession with sad endings. I just loved a book that was good enough to actually make me cry, even thought I knew how they would end. Thanks for triggering some fond childhood memories.

I used to read Lurlene McDaniel too! And wow...you are so right. I loved this book, and sobbed uncontrollably at the end....just like I used to when I was younger.
I'm totally into Lurlene McDaniel right now! I'm always crying my eyes out at the end, so then I wonder why I even bother to read her. But, they are addicting. I didn't think the end of My Sister's Keeper was as sad as some of Lurlene's endings.
I finished reading My Sister's Keeper this morning and then went to my email and was invited to join this group. I am not much of a groupie, but have to say that I was compelled to write about My Sister's Keeper and to read all of the comments.I agree completely with you Sammy. I was unable to put this book down. While not all sides are plausible, the book did draw me in and I did want to know what the end was. And I wasn't even annoyed by Campbell & Julia either!
I *love* Lurlene McDaniel - I started my Tween daughter on her books about two years ago, and she's just as addicted was I as at that age.
As I read these reviews I think about the movie "Educating Rita" - which takes a beautician from loving "Ruby Fruit Jungle" to appreciating really good books & doing a first class degree at a British University. These reviewers are still poised over the shampoo bowls of literature.
WARNING SPOILERS:I think Anna was a fighter and should have survived in the end, but rumor has it the movie was different, but I don't know how so.
The movie WAS different. It ended with Katie dying and Anna living. Also in the movie Julia wasn't in it. The book is a lot better.
Lurlene McDaniel! I had kept reading those books years ago despite the sad plotlines and endings. I had an unhealthy addiction to them..
I also absolutely adored Lurlene McDaniel's books when I was a teen. She was one of the authors that I read regularly. This was one of my favorite books. Great review!
Wow thanks for the wonderful review, i like what you said about you dont know which character to support. that's what I was expected to see in the review. I just watched the movie (it was so great) Some people gave them a one-star; i Think maybe they upset because of Anna's death. In the movie, Kate was the one who died though. Look forward to read it.Sorry I typed on the iPhone. English is kinda off. :)
