It's a little disappointing that people are rating this book on Amazon out of protest of its price. It's low rating does not give the book the recognition it deserves. This is my first Ken Follett novel, and I am hooked. I've read where some people have not been that interested in the subject matter of Fall of Giants and prefer the Middle Ages. I'm fascinated with 20th Century history, so this is right down my alley.

This novel covers the years of WWI and the Russian Revolution and follows 5 families. Their stories all connect at some point. While you invest in the characters, the story is plot driven and moves pretty swiftly through the years. There are times that a character may be left for a year before we hear from him again. But you don't feel like you're missing any crucial information.

My favorite portions were before and after the war. There is quite a bit of battlefield sections in the middle. They are well written, but I am more interested in the people than military tactics.

I was surprised at how quickly this book reads. Despite it's huge size, you can read it pretty quickly if you have the time to devote to it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Carolyn I too read Pillars of the Earth and then started Fall of Giants. The people is portrays are so believable. I actually liked the idea of following different characters. It kept you on your ties remembering who was was who.

Beth Bedee I just finished Pillars. He is a excellent writer. I'm anxiously awaiting the second edition in the 20th Century trilogy. I read somewhere it was due out this year.

Mary I believe book 2 is out in September! I can not wait to get it!

Brenda Pope I have been a huge Ken F fan for decades. You need to read his WWII spy intrigue books like Eye of the Needle and Key to Rebecca to name just a couple.

Matthew Olgin I enjoyed this book! I'm not the fastest of readers but I consumed this in about 5 days! Pillars and world without end were also great. Its a shame people protested over its cost, I wasn't aware of that. I can't wait for the next couple of weeks for the second in this trilogy to come out. I might actually buy it new!

Toni Popp Great review! I agree about the battlefield sections, but i did like the people. If you haven't read his book"Night over Water" i think you should. It's not as long but it has people you will like and a great ending (my opinion ;-)

Endre Barath Beth glad you started reading Follett my favorite one was Pillars of the Earth, it is worth for you to find it!

Cassandra Pillars of the Earth and World Without End (the sequal to Pillars) are my top 2 books ever! Highly recommend them, especially if you like this book!

Sue I just finished Fall of Giants which is my first Ken Follet book and I am hooked too! An epic tale that captures the lives of families from different walks of life. An amazing portrait of WW1~now onto next one Winter of the World!

Cynthia This one is not his best. I agree with Cassandra.
