While I really enjoyed the plotting of this novel, I have to say I was slightly offended by the constant voice of the author interjecting into the story and constantly stating the obvious. I know I should consider that times and moods were quite different when this was written...but I couldn't shake the feeling that the sarcastic tone of the novel was less directed toward society overall than even toward the reader directly. Overall, wonderful society story...but Thackeray/ the narrator should have been silent and let the reader come to their own sentiments about Vanity Fair. I think I would have enjoyed it much more.
