I love my Tamora Pierce! The first of a three book series set in the fantasy world of Tortall, Beka Cooper is only a Puppy in the Provost's Guard. The book is styled as her diary, a log of her first year in training. I love her fierce attitude combined with her anxiety producing shyness. It makes for a real, believable, kick-ass girl heroine. Besides, she has dozens of friends (including a lady knight, a mage and various other rushers, puppies and rats) who make her life textured and interesting. Not to mention her feline counterpart, Pounce, who always has a way of undoing a mystery or cheering Beka up when she's down. This book, like all her other books, makes me so grateful that Tamora Pierce is still writing strong girl characters!
