This was a sort of magic realism novel with just small bits of magic in a mostly ordinary setting. I felt like some of the magic was just tacked on - it seemed to serve no practical purpose at all. The story is about a young girl who moves in with her grandfather after her mother's death. She finds her reception in the town is a very mixed one. Her mother never talked about her childhood and soon Emily discovers why. The secret she uncovers is hard for her to digest, but a woman who went to school with her mother will help her. In the course of this story two women learn to belong and come to terms with their identities.
